After reading a few other food blogs reference the "Deok-Beokki Lady," we decided it might be worth finding her to check out her incredible food. Her specialty is *gasp* Deok-Beokki. Deok-Beokki is a dish with rice cakes (kind of a cross between a really thick noodle and dough) covered in a spicy sauce. It's a staple of any Korean diet and can be found on almost every street in the city, if not the country. The rumor is that this lady has the best because it's made with tons of garlic, not as much sugar, and a whole lot of sarang. Finding her can be tough. She's hidden away in one of the old markets that isn't exactly known as a tourist-type attraction. It's just a functional market for people looking to buy various foods. This market is about a 10 minute walk from the subway. We finally found her. She's a tiny lady with a huge smile and she proudly hangs pictures of her stints on all of the major television networks up in front of her typically small food stand. We decided to order one spicy and one plain version of her Deok-Beokki. She cooks it fresh in front of you and uses plain Korean to elicit some small talk. She is probably the most loving, welcoming Ajumas (older lady) in Seoul.
She likes to see you taste the food before you take it, so you have to politely put a spicy rice cake covered in scalding grease in your mouth and smile to let her know you approve of the order. Savannah's a real pro.
We took our food to a park and ate a lot more of it than we intended to. It was honestly that good. It's really heavy on garlic, so be prepared. For me, that's always a good thing.
